In fact, I wish I could just sit down and learn Java, .Net and everything else really quickly. They’re so dull, but the salary for the jobs requiring them is fantastic.
Are you sure that’s not a typo? Come on…you know what people are like with their punctuation.
Anyway, until you are fully Java qualified, I have my fingers and toes crossed for getting this job. In fact I am even crossing Barney’s toes as I type.
He ain’t too pleased.
Actually, I find VB.NET quite an easy language to work with. The only draw back is the fact that it’s windows only and the fact that you have to use the .net framework.
Hi Dan – been a while since I said hi. Like the new design a lot – it’s elegant… one of yours or…?This post makes me laugh – I know excatly how you feel. Infact would like to learn Java myself – actually am learning a bit of Python. I was reading a tutorial about Spring (see the ad) earlier today – all I can say is bonkers – but kind of inspiring. I think though once you know a language well picking up others becomes easier and easier – at the end of the day a loop is a loop is a loop and SQL is the same whatever…
What are you filling your days with – there are worse things to do than just learn stuff for the sake of learning… and being broke is hard.
Cheers
Hi John, nice to hear from you.
This design is indeed one of mine. It’s not too bad – it was a rather quick bit of work, but I felt like it was time to have something I had done myself, even if it wasn’t something I considered a work of excellence.
I looked at Spring myself actually, not long after seeing that ad. It didn’t scare me too much, but I really didn’t feel like sitting down and learning it.
I’m filling my days with a mixture of things really. Music, writing, programming, sleeping, and general mongery amongst the job hunting plague.
I took a look at Python myself a while back, when I was at COSMIC. A client wanted me to look at Plone, which is a Python CMS. It’s quite interesting actually, but was way out of my reach at the time.
Hello – no – I like the design – minimalism is definately the way.The thing I found a bit carzy about stuff like spring is all the XML config files – when you look at something like CakePHP or Ruby on Rails – all that configuartion is implicit – what is it they say – convention over configuration – so you can set that stuff yourself but the defaults are normally fine…
You know I was getting into Cake at COSMIc – well now I really try not to work in anything else it is so much fun to work with (proviso – it took me a long time to get me head around it) – it kind of brings the joy back into making website and applictaions…
Also been messing about with Turbo Gears ( a python framework) agian recently – thats fun too.

Been meaning to learn java when I find time. Might not be as hard as I think especially after learning VB.NET
Well yeah, it’s obviously a typo. It was probably supposed to be £300-£450, which is pretty much standard for contract Java work.
VB.NET scares me. Well, VB on a whole is just icky and gross.

It’s not so much a horrible language, it’s just… VB.
I don’t know, I’ve always been fond of web languages and not so much application languages.

It could still use a little work, but it’s certainly my favourite so far.
I didn’t venture that deeply into Spring to be honest.
What fun things are you doing in Python?
