Awaiting the Future

Posted June 15th, 2007 in Archive by Darfuria

Well, everything has been quite eventful lately…

Marieke finally got ’round to telling her Mum about me. She was very nervous about this, but it went really well, and I’m very proud of her. It’s OK for me to go over and see her (so her parents don’t think I’m some psycho rapist (or they do and they’re into that kind of thing)), and I’m looking at going over at the beginning of July.

John, at work, told us that he has handed in his notice, which is slightly scary. He focuses mainly on the programming side of website development at COSMIC, whilst Ben is the designer. I’m the third guy on the website team, and do some of both, though mainly programming. I hope they find someone to replace him soon enough, as things are certainly going to be somewhat hectic. It has been 9 months already since I started there, and my contract is drawing to an end. I’m hoping I will find out soon enough what is going to happen; whether they’ll employ me permanently or not.

It was a really nice rainy day today. For some reason I just felt happy walking in the rain. The sky looked so awesome when I got home, as well. In fact, check this picture out.

Sky

Who ever would have thought that Exeter would look so amazingly blue. Okay, so there might have been a few minutes of Photoshop involved there… Maybe.

David came over yesterday and made a glass of orange squash, which turned out to be a bit gross. He left it on the window sill, where I completely forgot about it. I woke up this morning and it looked something like this:

Orange Squash Looks tasty, huh? All of the squash has settled, cloudily, at the bottom.

It’s nice to feel that so many things are coming together, yet so many things are up in the air. Aside from going to Ireland, I am looking forwards to getting my debts paid off and then spending money on things I would like to buy. Other than that, I hope to get some more website development done at home. I’d also like to get more readers and commenters. So, lots of things to be getting on with, which is great. I hate having nothing to do.

  1. Love the picture, Dan.

What only slightly scary? (only joking) – I wouldn’t worry about your job, they need you… anyway are you quite sure you’re not a psycho rapist? – I mean it’s important to be quite clear about that kind of thing.

More of a surprise than generally scary. I hope they do, otherwise it makes it a bit pointless being anywhere, really.

I am pretty sure that I am not, but if you have any suspisions…

In a wider social sense, this is the problem with short term contracts in general – how can people be expected to contribute meaningfully when their employers aren’t prepared to give anything meaningful in return…

  5. Darfuria says:

Although in my case the short-term contract was only the issue because of the reason I came here in the first place, it was never determined that I would leave after I had completed the “qualification” with ETS – and obviously that is the case with everyone that joins in my position. I’m just waiting for the whole thing to be reviwed.

Displaying enthusiasm, dedication and intellect certainly aids the situation, I think.

I know – anyway myself and Ben have always maintained that it is stupid to get rid of people as soon as you have trained them up… is it really nine months?

  7. Darfuria says:

    Yeah, seems a little pointless:
“I know, let’s spend 12 months of our time training these people in how to work for a company like ours, then get rid of them so that they leave with the knowledge of how our company works, but work for somebody else.”

That doesn’t make a lot of sense really, does it? Yeah, September I started. Madness!
