Windows Organisation

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

One of the things that really annoys me about Windows XP - and don’t even get me started on Vista - is the default system folders, and folders applications create which can’t be moved.

Take, for example, the My Documents folder. The path to this folder is usually something along the lines of:

C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\My Documents

This obviously makes perfect sense. However, the path to another system folder, say My Music, would be this:

C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\My Documents\My Music

Now, that’s not entirely logical, because a music file isn’t really a document. Why not put the folder in a more logical place, say, the level above. The same for My Pictures, My Videos, etc.

Now, that’s not the only problem, as you might have guessed. Several programs and games you install also insist on creating directories in My “Documents”. The screenshot below shows my My Documents folder.

My Documents

As you can see, the folders I haven’t blurred out shouldn’t even be in the My Documents folder. Microsoft really could have been slightly more logical about this and made directories in the user root as opposed to in the folder that, going by the name, should be intended for documents.

Throw My Music, My Pictures and My Videos in the \%user%\ folder along with My Programs and My Games and organisation would be so much better.

They should employ me.

Update Time

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Well, WordPress 2.3 is out soon, which means inevitably I am going to have to update lots of installations of WordPress.I’ve got 5 installations of WordPress running on my server - on different domain names - so this could take a while.

Times like these I wish I had that webserver I’ve been wanting to build. Not that it would help any, I just want to build a machine I can leave on (with a backup power supply) to run scheduled backups of various websites and databases, etc.

When I can afford it, I’ll build one. It’ll look a bit like this:

Webserver

Unfortunately I still haven’t managed to design a website I’m happy with. Ah well, such is life.

Tired

Friday, September 21st, 2007

I’m tired of my life at the moment. In fact, I’m going to list the things I’m tired of, in no parfuckingticular order.

  • Life
  • Programming
  • Attempting to design things
  • Having a mental block on things to write
  • Where I live
  • My room
  • My broken keyboard
  • My right wrist keeps clicking
  • My shitty internet connection
  • Video games with very annoying AI
  • How unfit I am
  • My random temperature changes
  • Lack of money
  • Unemployment
  • People on Windows Live Messenger
  • My hair
  • Not being able to sleep properly

So yeah, a lot of things I’m tired of.

Joys.

Next Generation Cutting Board

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Whilst making toast this morning, I suddenly got an idea for a new type of cutting board.

Basically you have a rubber cutting board with a rotating shaft at one end. On this you can place a roll of clingfilm or whatever you fancy. The general idea would enable you to roll the material across the cutting board so that you could prepare food on top of it. When you are done preparing you simply remove said material and throw it away, reducing the amount of mess in the kitchen. Alternatively you could prepare your food and then wrap it in said material quite easily.

Edit

“How’s your grammar?”
“She’s fine thanks.”

New Image Gallery

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Well, I wasn’t too fond of the Gallery I was using, and Flickr sucks, so I’ve moved to Picasa Web (because Google is way better than Flickr). So, you can check my new gallery here:

Also, if you have a Google account you can comment on the pictures and such.

You know, I’ve had my camera for 7 months now, and I really haven’t taken enough photos. It’s about time I stopped worrying about it getting stolen and take it out with me so that I can populate the internet with amusing photos.
