Thinking

Posted September 30th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Well, I just got a new keyboard, so here is a perfect oppertunity to test how fast I can type on it.

When you think of something in your mind, do you think of it in a language? I mean, when you hear a thought in your head, is it in a certain language? Or is it just a thought, and a language is applied to it later? What I’m trying to get at is, when I think of something, obviously I get the thought in my head. Now, I can think about that thought and comprehend it into words, which are in English. I can’t really speak any other languages, so I was just thinking and wondering if people who spoke other languages ‘thought’ in different languages.

For example: If I thought “I want a cup of tea”. would a Spanish person think “Quiero una taza de té” (excuse the poor translation).

I find it really hard to understand how someone would think of something in a language that isn’t English, and be able to comprehend that. I guess that’s because I don’t really speak any other languages though. Is it confusing when you know more than one language? Can you think in more than one language? So could you think “I want a cup of tea” or “Quiero una taza de té” if you knew Spanish?

Something that I thought that was quite weird, really. What are your thoughts?

Conclusion: Mmm, this keyboard is so nice. No typos, and I typed that in just over 3 minutes (including the time it took me to search for the translation of “I want a cup of tea).

Template Change

Posted September 28th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Yeah, I’ve gone and changed my template again. You might notice that the font styles and colours will change through my older posts simply because of the way I posted then, and the way I do now. However, it matters not.

I’ve decided I really like these two blue colours on pages. I put them on my MySpace page first, and liked them, so I thought I’d use them here too. I’ll change this template (when I’ve learned enough CSS to be able to make my own templates for things like this) to be square, like my MySpace profile.

Obviously I’m not completely happy with this template at the moment because there are only two collums, and I need three. Hopefully another (and perhaps final) update to come.

I’m also planning to change my website over the next few days to incorporate this colour style, and generally update the content with some new-learned stuff.

I’m so glad I’m learning some stuff I never thought I’d be able to learn at Cosmic, I hope it continues to be like this or gets better.

New keyboard should be delivered tomorrow, so I might type a nice long post to test it out ;)

Excessive and Rogue Punctuation

Posted September 26th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Hello??????????????????????????????? Are you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????….!?!?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!

OH GO BURN SOMEWHERE, WILL YOU!

Yeah, that’s right. You idiots (or should I say idiot’s) who find it necessary to use punctuation to the absolute worst have finally made me write about you. Why… OH WHY!? I mean, most of you typ lyk dis 2 try nd sav tym nd den u go nd use lotz ov lyk ? and ! marks!?!?!?!?!

Seriously, when people use more than one question mark, exclamation mark, or more than three fullstops, they should be beaten with something long and soggy. How many questions did you ask? Oh, by the amount of question marks you used I thought you asked A HUNDRED AND FOURTY TWO THOUSAND NINE HUNDREND AND EIGHTY FOUR! Seriously, I thought I was trippin’. I thought you were writing in some magical invisible coloured font that I couldn’t read, it was begining to scare me.

If you’re going to type in short hand then don’t waste your time by using excessive amounts of punctuation. Stop frustrating me to the point where I want to make a giant statue of a hyphon and beat you around the knees with it. Just don’t use any if you can’t understand how to use it properly.

If you don’t know what it does, don’t use it! You’d look far less stupid if you left the apostrophe out than putting it in the wrong place. Amusingly, whenever I criticise peoples’ use of punctuation and grammar in somewhere like a pub (18’s for example) then people will say:
“Common people come here, Danny. They don’t care about things like apostrophes.” Yeah!? Well I’m not common, and I’m here, so correct the god damn notice, now! Honestly, just because they’re common, doesn’t mean I should have to put up with their stupidity.

Ok, I admit my spelling, grammar and everything else isn’t 100% perfect, but then nobody is 100% perfect, and I’m only 17.

I know! I’m going to make myself look intelligent by using apostrophe’s. Oh look, I look like a dumbass already.

Seriously, don’t bother.

Goings On

Just wanted to make a general update, so I thought I’d post it here.

The need for a camera is ever increasing. I keep seeing things that I want to take pictures of. I think my mind is becoming more creative and subconciously plans ahead a lot more than it used to.

For example – I wanted to take a picture of this kid who got on the bus the other day holding a thin branch of a tree (with loads of leaves and offcoming twigs) which was bigger than he was. He sat on the bus and sort of hid behind this branch, and ate an apple. Thought this was quite bizzare.

When I was on my way to work I saw a bookshop called “The Curious Otter”. Thought that was quite a weird name for a bookshop, yet somewhat amusing. Didn’t occur to me that it might be called that because the village is called Ottery St. Mary, and therefore the people might call themselves Otters. Not 100% sure about that though.

Made a lemsip earlier (cause I’ve got a damn cold) and found it amusing that the sachet specified “for oral use”.

In other news, my first week of work at Cosmic was fun. The getting up is hard though. I’ve always been terrible with mornings, and I expect I always will be. The journey home is pretty awful also. It’s 12 miles with 2 bus journeys, but takes around 90minutes, and often more. Stupid traffic and bus service.

I sold my World of Warcraft account yesterday too. I got £150 for it, which isn’t bad for the past 18 months, I guess. I know I could have gotten more for it, but not a huge amount. I thought it was wise to take the £150, considering I’m going to be getting paid monthly anyway, £150 seemed like a good enough offer. Really going to miss a lot of my friends though. Logged in to delete people from my friends list and such, felt very nostalgic. Hopefully that will pass soon though.

Richard Hammond: Update

Posted September 22nd, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Well, I’ve heard a lot of rumors, but these seem to be most believable:

He was in fear of suffering severe brain damage, but has come out of intensive care now. He’s making basic responses to people: Jeremy Clarkson told him he’s a shit driver and he smiled.

It seems the guy is making a great recovery, and we can only wish him the best of luck.

[This] page was set up, so please do go ahead and donate.

Richard Hammond

[Read this]

I’m not a media person. I don’t care for those magazines that go into far too much depth of celebrities’ lives, so that various people can drown themselves in the depths of dispair when the media release personal information from a very biased point of view. I think people should learn to mind their own, and reporters should back off.

Anywho, it’d seem that God is pissed off with celebrities at the moment. First Steve Irwin, and now this. I was going to put the word “celebrities” in inverted commas, but I feel that people like Richard Hammond and Steve Irwin actually deserve that title. People like Steve Irwin and Richard Hammond are the sort of people that nobody really dislikes. I mean, why can’t God go and inflict his wrath upon the “celebrities” that don’t really do anything for the world apart from influence people, and produce shit music. Why can’t Britney Spears go and get critically injured in a car crash? What has she ever done for the world of media and entertainment apart from reveal her body and learn how to dance?

The annoying thing about this is I bet it’ll get no attention at all. I bet there’ll be people who don’t know about it.

On a less negative note, though, I hope that he makes a rapid and full recovery, and returns to Top Gear soon.

Prices

Posted September 19th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

I’m not really sure where to go with this post, but isn’t it weird how everything is priced over the world.

For example, in the UK you’ll pay around £10 for a CD. That’s £10 for an average of say, 12 tracks. Out of that £10 I wonder how much of it will go to the actual writers of the music. I mean, obviously for a shop to sell a CD for £10, they’d have had to buy the bulk of CDs to work out a lot less than that, so that they make a profit.

I think it was Cliff Richard who got so tied up with his record company, filesharing, and the cost people were paying for music that eventually he told them to fuck off, and uploaded everything he’s written to a website, which could be downloaded for free.

It’s the “middle man” that really screws things up in that area of things, really. I mean, it’s no wonder file sharing dominates the internet so much. If you think about the amount of music you want to listen to, the amount of music you have, and the amount of money you’d have to pay if you bought it all. It’s insane.

Also, the prices of PCs, for example. Now, the PC I’ve configured to my own specification is looking like it’s going to set me back around £1600. Now, yeah, PCs used to cost more than that, and you could still spend more. For the same price one could have a reasonably good holiday in another country, a second hand car, or pay for around 1/2 a year’s worth of shopping.

Money; it’s stupid.

Back!

Posted September 16th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Yay, after having a huge kerfuffle with having an internet connection, I’m actually reconnected 3 days early (but 7 days late).

It’s funny how life without an internet connection is so oddly boring. Computers just aren’t the same without a connection. I sat here without one and thought of doing various things, but none came to mind that were particularly interesting or entertaining. I was condemmed to a week of TV and having to head into town to use my friend’s internet café, which I am so thankful for existing.

The week just got worse, really. First the internet was meant to be back in 24 hours, then 48 after that… And then after that an unknown amount of time. Eventually they said it’d be back on the 19th, and now I get it back. So, without internet at home I went to the café, but the other day that was in fear of being closed down. “Great!” I thought, as if my week couldn’t possibly get worse. Oh how I was wrong, for last night I was ill. Yay!

I’m better now, though, and I seem to have gotten the internet back 3 days before I imagined, so I’m currently happy.

I’m considering cancelling my World of Warcraft subscription. I’ve pretty much pulled myself away from the community I was in there, so it wouldn’t be so hard, but it’d be a shame to say goodbye to the last 18 months of my life. I guess those that don’t play online games, and have never really experienced a big online community to its full potential would consider that the last 18 months of my life have been a waste, but it’s not just a game, and it’s not just lots of 50 year old perverted men behind computers. Anyway, we won’t go into that.

The reason I want to cancel is because I start at Cosmic on monday, and because of this I’d like to be able to play some games that I don’t have to get tied up in. It’d be nice to actually have more of an externally social life, and also be able to play games when I want to, without people having to depend or rely on me attending various scheduled events. I haven’t come to a decision on that yet though.

It’s funny, after spending a week of watching TV and being reminded of how completely and utterly shit it is, I realised how many people actually sit there and watch it for days on end. I guess those people could say the same about myself and computers, but to me using a PC seems a lot more constructive, real and communicative. I’ve never wanted to assassinate so many people in the matter of 5 minutes, and I’ve never been so close to wanting to be depressed. It’s scary.

Looking forwards to the release of Neverwinter Nights 2, Might & Magic: Dark Messiah and various other upcoming games. I’m going to get around to building a new PC soon, which’ll make me a happy bunny.

I’m considering making a forum called “Exeter Musicians” or “South-West Musicians” to allow people from around here to get in contact about being in bands, playing together and upcoming gigs. More about that when I’ve thought about it some more though.

A little earlier this year here there was a very heavy rape attack on a middle-aged victim. She’s still in hospital, and the authorities are still investigating the crime. It was on crime watch the other day. I wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t seen that show, though. Anyway. I was walking to the shop from the internet café a few days after I’d seen that episode of Crime Watch and saw one of the news boards outside saying:

“NAKED WOMAN!
NEW PICTURES FOUND!”

Now, that was one of those moments where I really wanted a camera, to take a picture of it and post it here. I didn’t know that was infact relating to that crime until I’d spoken to someone online later that day. “Naked woman” is a pretty harsh alias for the media to give that woman, though. I mean, I’m sure she’s put clothes on now, and it’s not really a very nice way to be identified or remembered. Although, I guess seeing “NAKED WOMAN” in big letters will attract 99% of the male population, so…

About all I have to say for now. Going for a redesign at some point, not sure when though.

Edit: Changed the template, but will probably change it again when I can be bothered…

Stupid Things

Posted September 12th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

Being someone who gets very irritated very quickly by stupid people, or people who clearly don’t think enough to even be able to survive, I’ve started picking up on various things that people do that either really bug me, or make me wonder “why do they do that!?”

No doubt there’s a stupidly long list of these things amongst various other thoughts I have, so I may edit this post later.

So, here goes:

When people point to their wrist when they ask the time.

When people announce what they’re about to do in the bathroom.

When people hold their hand/arm out for far too long when they see the bus.

When people step back on the pavement when the bus is about to stop.

When people speak in a really high pitched voice when talking to animals or babies.

When people are onomatopoeic when they talk to the above.

Loud people on busses.

People who fail to use proper language when communicating online.

People who use excessive punctuation.

Abuse of acronyms.

When people use punctuation in an attempt to look clever, but completely fail to use it in the right place.

Ok, so that’s not as much as I thought I’d think of, but it’s a start!

Jobbie

Posted September 7th, 2006 in Archive by Darfuria - 0 Comments

I haven’t really made any blog posts recently. I suppose not a lot has annoyed me or bothered me enough to be articulated on here. Well, actually, that’s a lie; I’m just lazy!

I recieved an email from Cosmic the other day saying that the person they took on for the modern apprenticeship in website development left “somewhat unexpectedly”, and asked if I was still interested in the position, if I’d like to go in for an “informal meeting”. I went in today and got offered (and accepted) a two month trial there. It seems as if I’ll be helping the designer and programmer (meaning I’ll have to do some programming and designing in Photoshop), whilst working towards an/some NVQ qualification/s.

Quite pleased that they emailed me, and I’m hoping the position is enjoyable as it sounds. I suppose over the next few weeks I should attempt to improve my skills with various programming languages, and see where I stand with Photoshop. No doubt I’ll pick up a load of things whilst I’m there.

I’m considering expanding this blog to include various other writing, not simply me rambling on about the idiocy of the human race. I suppose I’ve moved on from the stage of being inspired by Maddox’s writing, and realise that I should do my own thing. So, update to come, perhaps.

Haven’t really seen much change with the beta blogger, it’s looking ok though. Be interesting to see what else (if anything) is included.
